Service Description
At Thornwood Schools, children ages 6–12 will discover the fascinating world of plants through a blend of science, creativity, folklore, and hands-on exploration in this introductory herbology course. Campers will spend the week studying the beauty, mystery, and practical uses of plants while learning how people throughout history have used flowers, herbs, roots, and trees for art, food, medicine, dyes, and storytelling. Students will explore the basics of plant science including plant anatomy, seed growth, pollination, ecosystems, and the plant life cycle through engaging activities and nature observation. Throughout the week, campers will participate in a variety of interactive projects including flower dissection, plant sketching, leaf rubbings, microscope exploration, seed paper making, botanical journals, nature walks, and simple plant experiments. This course also includes imaginative folk-art activities inspired by traditional herbalism and natural crafting. Campers will create colorful plant dye crafts, mix nature-inspired “potions,” experiment with natural pigments and scents, and learn how plants have been used in cultures and folklore around the world. Designed to spark curiosity and wonder, this course encourages children to slow down, observe the natural world, and connect science with creativity in a playful and memorable way. Campers will leave with handmade botanical projects, new scientific knowledge, and a deeper appreciation for the plants growing all around them. No prior science experience is required. All materials are included.
