Service Description
At Thornwood Schools, children ages 6–12 will step into the warm and welcoming world of cottage cooking in this hands-on folk life course inspired by home gardens, family kitchens, and traditional hospitality. Throughout the week, campers will learn the basics of preparing simple homemade foods while discovering where ingredients come from and how food brings people together. Students will explore beginner-friendly kitchen skills including measuring, mixing, kneading, safe food preparation, basic baking, simple cooking techniques, and garden harvesting. Campers will help gather herbs, vegetables, and edible flowers from the garden while learning about seasonal ingredients and the importance of caring for the land that feeds us. Throughout the course, children will create a variety of simple homemade foods and will learn how to make their own bread recipe from scratch. Lessons will also include table setting, kitchen teamwork, tea-time traditions, hospitality, and basic etiquette in a relaxed and encouraging environment designed to build confidence and independence. This course blends practical life skills with creativity, connection, and old-fashioned cottage charm. The week will conclude with a cozy shared meal and tasting event where campers can proudly serve some of the foods they created during the week. No prior cooking experience is required. All materials and ingredients are included.
